Programme Notes - Saturday 12th May 2018 vs Morley

May 11, 2018

Good afternoon and welcome to Jenny Lane! We would like to extend a warm greeting to our friends from Scatcherd Lane.

Our first team have made a very positive start to the 2018 season but face a real test in today’s game against Morley. I played in both the games against them last year and we were comfortably beaten each time. Finding a way to score runs against their strong seam bowling attack always seems to be the key to coming out on top. Fortunately, a number of our batters have already made strong contributions this year, Jack, Hamza and Blair have already registered fifties this year so fingers crossed they can come out on top.

As well as taking a fifty off the New Farnley attack in the Priestley Cup on Sunday, our overseas player Blair Oakley also made an impact with the ball on Saturday, taking 4 Bankfoot wickets. It is to be hoped that last weekend represents the first of many occasions where Blair will make his presence felt. The club extends a hearty welcome to Blair and we hope that all members will do as much as they can to help him feel welcome and settled in Baildon. As well as starring for the first team, Blair will also be assisting with our junior set up on training nights and match days, let’s hope our young prospects can learn lots from him.

Due to a last minute injury to our intended new skipper, Johnny Reynolds, the first team are currently being very ably led by Jack Hainsworth. Now in his third season with the club the extra responsibility appears to be bringing the best out of Jack along with his new opening partner, George Barker. They already appear to have formed an effective partnership and we all have our fingers crossed that they can continue to lay the foundations of our innings, giving the likes of Simon, Hamza and Mounam a real platform to build on. With the evergreen Mushy still turning it square and Ijaz refusing to bowl any bad balls the first team have a real chance to do something this year – touch wood!

2018 has also seen the return of an ex Baildon favourite to the club, Brett Kinsey. Originally signed to lead the attack in our second team, Brett has pushed himself for first team consideration and will be licking his lips at the thought of bowling to some of his former teammates today! No doubt the ball will be thudding into Reyno’s gloves with a bit more oomph than usual. Good luck Brett!

The second team also play Morley today and like the firsts will be wanting to continue a winning start to the season. Ex first team keeper Darren Wilson is now leading the side and has renewed his hunger for runs. With an experienced bowling attack made up of Jamie Abbott, Danny Hunt, Brett Kinsey and Adnan Sayed, the twos just need to add a few more runs to the equation and hopefully, come the end of the season, they could also be challenging for honours.

The club is currently in the midst of preparing for this year’s Beer Festival, taking place on the weekend of Friday 22nd June. This will be our first festival without its founder and sadly missed club stalwart, Simon Heginbotham. It’s not even been a month since Simon passed away and his loss is still being felt around the club and the wider community (his funeral is on Thursday 17th May at United Reform Church, Saltaire at 1pm with a celebration of life concert at Victoria Hall from 4pm. We will all be doing our best to keep the memory of Simon alive by putting the festival on in his honour.  We hope to raise lots of money for club funds and also fundraise for the charity Mind at the event. To boost our profits at the festival, we are seeking to get as many of the barrels of beer (£75) and bottles of gin (£50) sponsored by friends of the club. If you would like to help out please don’t hesitate to call me on 07970026316. Enjoy the cricket!
