Ever since our great friend Simon Heginbotham passed away in 2018, our annual beer festival has celebrated his memory. Obviously this year it will not be possible to hold our festival but we still wanted to mark the occasion. We have been looking to add to the festival with the staging of a regular game in his memory. It has taken some time to work out the best way to do this but we hope that we’ve now come up with a suitable game. On Sunday 30th August we are going to stage the first edition of a match we hope to play on the Sunday of every beer festival moving forward (fingers crossed that there are no more pandemics to contend with). Our under 18’s, captained by Adam Dean, will play a senior XI, led by James Butterfield in a 40 over a side game. They will be competing to earn the right to lift the Heggers Trophy. We are looking to start at 1pm, the bar will be open and you are more than welcome to come and enjoy a socially distanced drink in a safe environment. In his time with the club Simon championed our 3rd, 4th and 5th teams and fought hard to keep them alive during some very trying times. He helped numerous juniors find their feet in our senior teams and we think it would be a fitting tribute to him to stage a match between players representing all parts of our club. This will be followed by a game on Bank Holiday Monday between our juniors and coaches/parents – this will be much more of a fun game with slightly less at stake, that is apart from a number of parents who will be crossing their fingers that they don’t get dismissed by their children! We will again look to make a start at 1pm and the bar will be open for those coming to watch.
