Luckily for anyone reading this the intended writer of this week’s programme notes Membership Secretary Simon Heginbotham forgot he was due to do them and instead headed to Friday’s T20 blast match at Headingley. The good news is you get the chairman’s thoughts for the second time this season.
Last Saturday’s reversal at Wrenthorpe means we are still looking over our shoulders and the next few weeks will effectively define the direction the club will go in over the next 1, 3 and 5 years. Maintaining our position in Championship One is paramount as we look to strengthen our playing resources for 2018 across the whole club. We are without Mushtaq Ahmed today due to foot injury and Jamie Abbott due to a rib problem. We wish their replacements George Barker and Adnan Sayed well and both deserve their opportunity following strong performances in the second team. Simon Bailey will be missing in 2 weeks’ time when he has his overdue shoulder op and will be tough to replace but as a club we have the personnel able to step up and keep us in the division with plenty of games to spare, starting today.
Several of our opponents are well known to us. I remember batting with Jack ‘Boysey’ Holland in an under 12s game for Saltaire years ago when he was literally smaller than the stumps, even then he had plenty to say…! He could hit it further than me even then which either speaks volumes of his natural ability or my lack of it…
Let’s hope today is a closely fought encounter like the reverse fixture in which we went down in a tight finish after a Simon Bailey century had put us in a good position.
