Programme Notes versus Morley - Saturday 22nd April

Programme Notes – by Ashley Free

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to our visitors Morley. This season looks to be exciting not only for us but for the other sides in the new look Championship One Division. During the off season we have re-signed overseas all-rounder Waqas Maqsood whom we have high hopes of at least repeating his powerful displays with bat and ball during his last stint with us in 2014. Another new face is Ijaz Ahmed from Idle who will open the bowling. Ijaz is an experienced campaigner who performed admirably in a struggling Idle side over the past couple of seasons. Today promises to be a challenge as we are without Waqas who is expected to arrive in the next couple of weeks and leading batsman Jonny Reynolds. This gives an opportunity to some of our leading second teamers to stake their claim for a permanent position in the side.

The second team have a new captain in Daniel ‘Mini’ Metcalfe who has replaced Brad Hinchliffe at the helm. Mini will be looking to blend youth and experience as he leads the side to several new grounds in Championship Two.

The third team will also have a new captain and new signing in James Cottle leading the side. James has had two previous stints with the club and hopefully can lead us to the upper end of the table.

Dominic Kelly will again lead the fourths with the help of Chris Hughes as they look to introduce some of our promising juniors into the big world of adult cricket.

In the days when Cricket’s popularity is dwindling we are proud that we are one of the few clubs in Yorkshire to run 4 senior teams as well as having a thriving junior section. Let’s hope that our commitment and effort is rewarded in 2017. Good luck to all.
