Last week I began the review of the weekend's results by using the phrase 'hundred avoidance'. Well, 3rd XI all-rounder Tawseef Ahmed was definitely listening as he compiled a fine 108* in the defeat of local rivals TPE at their picturesque Low Springs ground. At 87 for 6 we were heading for defeat until Billy Cawley, Tom Pickles and Josh Capper assisted Tawseef in building partnerships for the 8th, 9th and 10th wicket. On a surface where no other batter seemed capable of making a significant score, Tawseef dominated the match with his commanding knock.
George 'The Hundred Man' Birss led the 4th XI's successful pursuit of Yorkshire LPS's 143 all out. George put together an unbeaten 59 and was ably assisted by Sufyan Mahmood (47*) in helping the 4's reach their target with 7 overs to spare and 6 wickets in the tent. This represented a fantastic performance by Andy Norton's side as it was against one of the two teams to win promotion from their division this season.
Continuing the theme of chasing, our 1st XI were victorious against Undercliffe, knocking off their 172 all out in 39.1 overs, for the loss of only 5 wickets. Jonny Reynolds was the main man in the chase, finishing with an outstanding 80 not out. Assistance came from Simon Bailey, Ben Howell and Simon McDermott.
The chance for the season to end with only the second clean sweep (all 4 senior sides winning) of the year, hinged on the 2nd XI's match with Northowram Fields. In a match that will now forever be known as 'The battle of the beer', it was fitting that the 2's owed much to a vintage Darren Wilson innings. Abandoning his usual free-flowing style, the skipper knuckled down and dragged his side up to a competitive score with his 37 off 102 balls. George Barker (35) and Haris Hussain (27) were the other chief contributors. In reply Northowram were unable to match the stickability of our pragmatic leader. The beers were definitely on Darren after the match...

Bowling - 5 wicket hauls and above
On a day where 5 Baildon bowlers claimed 4 wicket hauls, only 1 player managed to get a 5 for. Step forward Joel Fothergill in the 1st XI, whose 5-80 blew away the Undercliffe top order and held them to an achievable target. Credit goes out to Joel for battling back from an injury that could have ended his season. Were it not for a spate of untimely injuries, Dwayne Heke's men could have definitely pushed for a top three position this season. Simon Bailey topped off a strong all-season with 3-15 to polish off the opposition tail.
Following on from last week's 7 for 27, Tim Joy continued his strong finish to the season with 4 more wickets in the defeat of Yorkshire LPS. We need the club statisticians to spend the winter working out how many wickets he has taken for Baildon and see where he stands in the dynasty of the likes of John Marshall, Mushtaq Ahmed, Jamie Abbott etc
There can be few second teams who have an opening attack with the pace of Sam Kelly and Haris Hussain. They put Northowram under the pump straight away before Stefan Mather swept through their middle order. Who knows how much higher up their division they would have finished if they had been able to call on the bowling of Jamie Abbott? We all hope he will be able to return to competitive action next season and claim his rightful place at the top of the all time second team wicket takers - just 25 more wickets to go!
There was a race for a 5 for in the 3rd XI match away at TPE. Sadly both Paul Hannam (4-47) and Josh Capper (4-45) ran out of overs to get over the line. Josh was especially unlucky when in the space of two balls, the two players with the safest hands in the team (Tom Dixon and Dave Hodgson) both conspired to drop relatively easy chances off his bowling. Earlier the Bald Angry Man himself, Paul Hannam, had rolled back the years to his early career at Tong Park and bowled 11 disciplined overs straight off the reel to peg back the TPE top order. Although Paul's 33 wickets should see him qualify for the league averages, a reliable slip cordon could have seen him take even more (well that's what he told me anyway...!)
